Dean Campbell earned an A.S. in Electronics Technology and another in Computer Science. He began his career with the Department of Defense, working for 15 years on airborne instrumentation systems. These systems gathered real-time flight data from the aircraft and onboard weapons systems. This data was transmitted using telemetry to allow flight test engineers to monitor the airborne system’s performance. During this time, he went to night school and eventually obtained his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Sacramento State University. He left the DOD to work for Folsom Research (now Barco) for three years as a Design Engineer on their radar scan converter product line. Dean then joined Caltrans District 3 Traffic Ops at the TMC in 2000, where he continued to apply his data-gathering expertise to further instrument the State Highway System. Dean was promoted to Senior Engineer in 2015 and is now responsible for implementing and maintaining the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and the applications used by the operators to manage the systems. He has rotated through HQ Division of Research and is now acting at the Division of Equipment implementing EV chargers throughout the state in support of the of the Governor commitment to greening the fleet.
