SHORT DESCRIPTION: Dr. Butler is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at SFASU where she has experience teaching in the DSW, MSW, and BSW Programs. Dr. Butler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor with many years of clinical and academic experience. She started teaching in academia in 2001, and she has worked with children and families either in practice settings or through professional research for 30 years.
LONG DESCRIPTION: Dr. Carrie M. Butler is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) where she has experience teaching in the DSW, MSW, and BSW Programs. She started at Stephen F. Austin State University in 2010. From 2016-2023, she was the SFASU Program Liaison for the Lone Star College location and a full-time faculty member for the School of Social Work. In this role, she taught and coordinated administrative functions for both the undergraduate and graduate programs. She is a member of the Graduate Faculty and she serves as a core faculty member in the newly instituted Doctor in Social Work (DSW) Program at the university.
Dr. Butler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LCSW-S) with many years of clinical and academic experience. She started teaching in academia in 2001, and she has worked with children and families either in practice settings or through professional research for 30 years. On a limited basis, she continues to work with clients through her private practice. Her areas of practice include working with youth, as well as conducting individual, marital, and family therapy using Adlerian and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Dr. Butler’s areas of scholarship include juvenile crime and drug use, and effective therapeutic approaches for at-risk youth and their families. More recently, her publication focus has been on theoretical orientations of early memories on personality development. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York at Oswego, a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University, and a Master of Science in Social Work and a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is also a member of professional organizations, including the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology (NASAP).
Throughout her academic career, Dr. Butler has been a founding member in the development of community coalitions. Additionally, she has served as the principal investigator on several grant projects, where she has conducted program evaluations for various school- and community-based initiatives. In 2002, she co-founded the Partners of the Safe Schools Initiative (PSSI) and served as the project evaluator for school-based programs funded by the Texas Commission on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. From 2005-2007, she was the Program Evaluator on a federal grant for the Roots of Change Coalition through Phoenix House-Dallas and Montgomery County Youth Services. From 2003-2008, Dr. Butler served as the Principal Investigator for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) with the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas, a project funded by the Department of Justice.
Additionally, Dr. Butler conducts professional presentations at international, national, and local conferences. She has recently presented internationally on topics related to early memories and empathy in social work practice for the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, and locally on topics related to individual, marriage, and family counseling for Woodlands Church.
