Dr. Berlinda Begay
Past-President
ABE NM
Dr. Berlinda Begay is a citizen of the Navajo Nation, currently residing in the community of Red Mesa, Arizona, on her grandparent’s homelands where her matrilineal clan roots stem. Raised in Rock Point, Arizona, she is a first-language Navajo speaker whose life and career are deeply rooted in the Diné way of life. With over 27 years of experience in Indian Education, she specializes in Indigenous language revitalization, reclamation, and preservation. Her work is driven by a passion for cultural identity advocacy and the proven success of culturally responsive teaching—a methodology she experienced firsthand as a student in a bilingual bicultural school. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees specifically focused on Navajo bilingual bicultural education and administration. Her humble upbringing serves as the primary inspiration for her mission: to serve Navajo children and the "unborn" by ensuring the language and culture remain a living, breathing force for future generations. She views her work in language reclamation not just as a career, but as her life's purpose.
