Niclas Hällström is Director of WhatNext?, a platform to explore new and alternative development ideas and catalyse action for social change. Through this work he has helped convene activists, scholars and progressive government officials to set in motion numerous regional and global initiatives across interconnected issues, including health, disarmament, globalisation, economics, and climate justice.
During the last decade Niclas has focused much of his work on promoting renewable energy and real transformative solutions to climate change, while exposing dangerous distractions such as geoengineering, carbon trading and more recently misleading ’net-zero’ targets. He is currently engagement in Fossil Fuel Non-Prolifeation Treaty initiative focusing on strategy development and advancement of its third pillar (renewable energy transition, just transition and economic diversification) as well as mobilisation in Sweden/Nordic countries.
Over the years he has helped catalyse the formation of various networks and initiatives such as the Global Peoples Health Movement, and Antibiotic Resistance Coalition and played a key role in developing and catalysing the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative and the Least Developed Countries Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Initiative for Sustainable Development. He is also a Senior fellow at the Centre for Environment and Development Studies at Uppsala University and President of the board of ETC Group.
