Badvertising: Fossil fuel ads - why we need to end them and how to do it
2:00 PM - 3:45 PM Wed
After a few year of campaigning against fossil fuel propaganda in classrooms in the Netherlands, Femke recognized the huge obstacle that every fossil advertising is in the transition. She took the Tobacco Convention as an example and started the campaign Reclame Fossielvrij to ban all fossil ads from. Not only from schools, but also from our streets, our news papers, our social media, our sportclubs and musea. The ban concerns ads by the fossil fuel industry, ads for air travel, cruises and fossil fueled vehicles.
Apart from avoiding emissions and eroding lobby power of fossil fuel industry, a ban on fossil ads is also an important trigger for a social tipping point, which is urgently needed to keep temperature rise below 1.5C.
Reclame Fossielvrij campaigned for a ban on fossil ads in Amsterdam, which became the first city in the world that took steps to ban fossil ads.
Femke has been campaigning full time at the world wide Fossil Free movement since early 2016. Alarmed by climate disruption and the inaction, she then took a year-long 'climate sabbatical' from her day job as freelance editor to campaign against fossil fuel industry. She never stopped.
