NCPA: Five Decades in the Making

Roger Fontes has almost 40 years of electrical industry experience. His career started with the Los Angeles Department of Water Power before spending five years at the California Energy Commission. The bulk of his career was spent with the Northern California Power Agency, where he served as Manager of Engineering and Development and Assistant General Manager for External Business Affairs. Roger played a critical role in NCPA’s transformation from an energy service provider to a vertically integrated utility. During his tenure at NCPA, Roger was appointed by the California Governor and U.S. Secretary of the Interior to serve on the Bay-Delta Advisory Council representing the state’s hydroelectric power industry. Roger closed out his career as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer for Florida Municipal Power Agency.
Roger holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Southern California. He has published articles on clean coal technologies, combined cycle generation development, power pooling, geothermal project development, integrated energy planning, competitive market theory and energy risk management.
He has three children and three grandchildren and lives in Kona, Hawaii.
