Justin Robert Keene is an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Electronic Media and is the director of the Cognition & Emotion Lab in the Center for Communication Research. His research is split between basic science, applied research, and outreach efforts. His basic science work explores the role of the appetitive and aversive motivation systems in the modulation and biasing of cognitive processing and emotional reactions. His applied research work uses this knowledge about the motivation systems to craft prevention and cessation messages related to drug use and smoking targeted specifically at college-aged individuals. His current outreach work uses media psychology and media neuroscience to inform the creation, testing, and distribution of intervention campaigns for individuals with aphasia, ADHD, and autism.
