Today and tomorrows challenges in humanitarian mapping
2:00 PM - 3:40 PM Tue
Markus Enenkel is a post-doctoral researcher at Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) and the disaster risk management coordinator of SOS Children’s Villages International (SOS CVI). He has a background in remote sensing, water and risk management. Markus’ current research focuses primarily on the use of satellite and socio-economic data to establish social safety nets for smallholder farmers via weather index insurance, to predict Malaria risk, improve flash flood risk mapping and drought/food security monitoring. He has worked with the different humanitarian aid organizations, such as Doctors without Borders or the Red Cross, the European Commission, the Earth Observation Data Centre, NASA, the World Bank and different UN agencies (UN IAEA, FAO, SPIDER, WFP). At SOS CVI he is leading the development of a global disaster risk management platform named Resilience360. This allows the translation of early warnings for natural and man-made disasters into early action in near real-time as well as emergency mapping based on very high resolution satellite imagery.
