Judge Humberto (Beto) Acosta is a licensed attorney in Texas for almost 18 years. He attended and received a degree in Sociology and Business Foundations from The University of Texas at Austin. In 2004 he received his Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He served as a prosecutor for over a decade for the 34th Judicial District of Texas which covers El Paso, Hudspeth and Culberson Counties. His professional experience includes over 50 trials and contested hearings that range from misdemeanor cases to Capital Murder. He was one of the founding prosecutors of the domestic violence unit and served in a supervisory capacity in that unit. He later served in and became the Chief Prosecutor of the Rape and Child Abuse Division, which exclusively prosecutes child physical and sexual abuse, elder abuse and child homicide cases. In that capacity Judge Acosta was on call 24 hours a day to assist law enforcement in review of search warrants relating to major crimes and investigations. He has been a board member of the Advocacy Center for the Children of El Paso, as well as a member of the Sexual Assault Response Team and Child Fatality Review Committee. Judge Acosta was appointed to Criminal Law Magistrate Court in November of 2016. He is currently a regional member of NAPSA (National Association of Pretrial Service Agencies) which seeks to find better outcomes and legal practices for addressing pretrial detention. In February, Judge Acosta was appointed the Presiding Judge of the El Paso Criminal Law Magistrate Court following the retirement of his predecessor. The Criminal Law Magistrate Court operates 24 hours a day/7days a week and has 11 full and part time Judges. It serves as the Extradition Court for El Paso County. Judge Acosta currently resides in El Paso. He is married to his beautiful bride Cynthia, and they have three beautiful boys named Julian, Joseph and James.
