Laura leads the Hispanic Federation’s Washington, D.C. office focused on federal policy advocacy issues including immigration, Puerto Rico disaster recovery, rebuilding, and equity, the environment, education, health care, civil rights including voting and reproductive, and LGBTQ issues. In this capacity, she engages local, regional, and national partners to promote federal policies that improve and advance the quality of life for Latinx and immigrant communities. Esquivel is a seasoned political and legislative strategist with more than 25 years of experience working at all levels of government and with the non-profit advocacy sector. Ms. Esquivel holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she expanded her civil rights work to include international human rights, and a master’s degree in Political Science from California State University, Los Angeles, as well as a bachelor’s degree in American Politics. She was appointed twice by Maryland Governor O’Malley to serve in Senate-confirmed positions, including five years on the Maryland Civil Rights Commission. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Laura has spent the past 18 years in the Washington, DC area with her partner and their two beloved rescue pups.

For 30 years, Hispanic Federation’s work has centered on building power and capacity in Latino and immigrant communities and in the nonprofits that serve them through institutional development and capacity building, policy advocacy, and direct programs in the areas of education, immigration, health, civic engagement, voter registration, and economic and community development.
