Scale-Dependent Bacterial Characteristics and Food Safety Compliance in Food Outlets of Central Virginia's Deserts

Dr. Chyer Kim is an Associate Professor in the food safety and microbiology program at the Virginia State University (VSU) Agricultural Research Station (ARS). He received his MS and Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology from the University of Georgia with a concentration in Food Safety and Microbiology. Dr. Kim has worked as a researcher and teacher in various capacities at the University of Georgia, North Carolina A&T State University, and Virginia State University. He endeavors to teach and train students on current and emerging food safety issues, providing students with conventional and advanced techniques in food safety analysis and empowering them to meet global societal needs. His accomplishments in VSU alone include grantsmanship over $4M, training and mentorship of more than 50 students consisting of dietetic interns, undergraduate, and MS students, contribution to 47 scientific article publications in peer-reviewed journals, and numerous presentations at regional, national, and international meetings. He has also provided experiential education to pre-teens and teenagers who participated in USDA AgDiscovery and AgFest Field Day offered by VSU-ARS. He has also been a reviewer on USDA NIFA grant programs and an editorial board member in seven international journals, reviewing more than 100 articles. Overall, recognizing the importance of food safety education for students and stakeholders, he strives to improve the safety and quality of our region's food supply by integrating the 1890 Land-Grant mission through agricultural research, teaching, and extension outreach.
