BREAKOUT 1: Understanding Nonculturable Pathogens: Strategies for Preventing Enteric Viruses and Parasites in Food Production

Jan (‘Yan’) Vinjé Ph.D. leads the National Calicivirus Laboratory in the Division of Viral Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Vinjé received his Ph.D. at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1999 and moved to the US in 2000 for a postdoctoral training at UNC Chapel Hill. In 2006, he joined CDC and as Head of the National Calicivirus Laboratory he is responsible for CDCs norovirus laboratory program. Since 2009, he directs CaliciNet, a national norovirus strain surveillance network. He has served as technical expert on the norovirus subcommittee of the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods, was a PI on one of the work packages of NoroCore and is member of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses study groups on Caliciviridae and Astroviridae. He is currently a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and associate editor of the journal Food and Environmental Virology. In 2018, he initiated a global pediatric norovirus surveillance network (NoroSurv) to monitor which virus types cause the most severe disease in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis. Dr. Vinjé has published over 245 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters. His research interests include all aspects of viral gastrointestinal disease, including virus detection, characterization, as well as prevention and control of norovirus infections.
