Maria Hilda Rivera is the Director for Grid Modernization, Regulatory Department, at LUMA Energy in Puerto Rico.
In her prior role as Energy Advisor with Power Africa, a whole of US Government partnership to double access to electricity across sub-Saharan Africa, Maria Hilda worked with government, financial institutions, and developers to deliver clean, affordable, and reliable electricity. Ms. Rivera joined Power Africa for the launch of Beyond the Grid, Power Africa’s signature distributed energy program. She later led Power Africa's thinking on electricity distribution.
In 2020, she received the US Department of Energy's C3E Award, International, for her outstanding leadership and achievements in clean energy.
Prior to Power Africa, Ms. Rivera worked at the World Bank, where she worked on clean energy access in multiple countries. She also worked on the Lighting Africa Program during its inception and oversaw initiatives to increase the private sector’s role in delivering clean energy. She has also been an Energy Engineer at Energy and Security Group, a small female-owned company, and served at the American Council for Renewable Energy (ACORE), an umbrella trade association.
Her career has focused heavily on growing clean energy markets by bringing together government and private-sector perspectives. She has designed and implemented numerous programs to boost clean energy deployment and increase economic growth in developing countries.
