Agriculture, Meiji University
Director, Meiji University International Institute for Bio-Resource Research

Hiroshi Nagashima started his career, after earning Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo
(1984), working on embryology of large domestic animals mainly pigs and cattle at the Research
Center of Nisshin Flour Milling Co., Ltd., Japan. In 1991 he moved to Australia to work as
visiting research fellow at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical School, University
of Adelaide, and then took position as a senior research scientist at BresaGen Ltd, a South Australia
based biotechnology enterprise. He returned to Japan in 1997 and took position as associate
professor at Meiji University in 1999 after working two years at Biomedical Research Center,
Osaka University Medical School.
Hiroshi Nagashima has been pursuing application of cloned pigs and genetically engineered
pigs to the translational research. For this purpose, he established Meiji University International
Institute for Bio-Resource Research (MUIIBR: http://muiibr.com/english/index.html). MUIIBR is
an international research institute that is an organic network of domestic and international
universities, research institutions and business corporations with Meiji University at its hub.
MUIIBR’s purpose is to create, maintain and make use of biological resources based in animal
biotechnology, that will contribute to the development of next-generation medial technology.
