Brian Carmichael is a longtime activist, educator, organizer and artist. While incarcerated in California during the 1990s he helped organize and lead a series of non-violent protests demanding better care for Prisoners With AIDS, including starting a successful hunger strike that forced the state to spend millions to hire HIV-competent physicians and build the first of its kind hospice inside the prison. He now lives in NYC, where he is a certified Community Health Worker, Peer Educator, and Harm Reduction advocate, worker and instructor. He stays busy with Freedom Agenda, fighting to close Rikers Island, and the What Would an HIV Doula Do collective, known as WWHIVDD.
