Carlos Becerra, M.D., serves as the Medical Director of Cancer Research for Hoag Family Cancer Institute and a board-certified medical oncologist focusing on gastrointestinal cancers and early phase clinical trials development and implementation.
Dr. Becerra works with fellow cancer experts to improve the lives of patients through strategic leadership in advancing the institute’s clinical research program and increasing the number of cancer clinical trials available to patients. As a cancer researcher, he is committed to being part of a team that is dedicated in leading the way in cancer prevention, detection and treatment.
Dr. Becerra has led multiple teams and programs focused on cancer research and clinical trials. His accomplishments in the field of cancer research have earned him respect from his colleagues and patients. He is an active member of the Colombian Medical Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association for Cancer Research.
Dr. Becerra has co-authored numerous publications featuring a variety of cancer types in relation to genetics and treatments. He understands the importance of continued research to ensure patients have access to the latest treatment options.
Dr. Becerra attended medical school and completed his internship at the Universidad del Valle (Colombia), followed by his residency in internal medicine
at Saint Francis Hospital in Illinois, where he was named chief resident. Dr. Becerra completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he became an assistant professor of internal medicine shortly after completing his fellowship.
In his spare time, Dr. Becerra enjoys exercising, watching sports, reading, traveling, hiking and bike riding.
