Opening Keynote: Navigating the Food Safety Frontier: Politics, Priorities, and What's at Stake

Since January 2025, I work at Merieux Nutrisciences in the role of Chief Scientist where I provide input on methods used by the laboratories, assure the performance meets customer expectations, support overall foundation for food safety activities, represent the company at scientific events and interact with customers as needed.
My carreer in the US Government extended near 30 years culminating by being appointed as Under Secretary for Food Safety as confirmed by the United States Senate to lead the Food Safety Mission Area of the Department of Agriculture. Prior to that I held multiple positions within USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, including Chief Scientist, Executive Associate for Laboratory Services, and FSIS Western Laboratory, Laboratory Director.
During this tenure at USDA I also worked for the Codex Alimentarius Commission as Chair of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH).
Prior to USDA, I held several positions within the CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION including at NATIONAL CENTER FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE where I was Assistant Director for Public Health, Food Safety Office, at the NATIONAL CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH as an Epidemiologist and also as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer.
Prior the the Federal government carreer, I worked at the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT DAVIS VETERINARY MEDICINE TEACHING AND RESEARCH CENTER as an Accredited Veterinarian/ Epidemiologist / Lecturer.
I migrated to the United States in 1985 and before that I practiced veterinary medicine (mixed practice) at several locations in the country.
