Akiva Weingarten was born in New York in 1984, the oldest of 11 children. At age 17 he got his first Smicha (rabbinical ordination) from a Chassidic Yeshiva in Monsey, NY. At 18, he moved to Israel and was later ordained again by a Litvish Bet Din in Bnei Brak. At 26, he received his 3rd ordination from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, founder of the Jewish Renewal movement. Akiva is a student at Abraham Geiger Kolleg in Potsdam, studying to be ordained as a Reform Rabbi. Since 2019 he has been the Community Rabbi at Migwan, the liberal Jewish community in the Basel.
