Thriving in Turbulence - Credit Risk Related High Interest Rate Strategies

Justin has over 28 years of experience working in credit risk management positions in both commercial banking and risk consulting. He is a credit risk professional dedicated to working with RSM’s financial institutions industry group. Justin focuses on providing credit advisory and risk management consulting services to financial institutions of all sizes. He has significant experience in evaluating credit risk exposure as it relates to consumer/retail credits, commercial credits, including leveraged lending, syndicated credits, shared national credits, commercial real estate, commercial and industrial and asset-based lending transactions.
Justin’s representative experience includes the following:
• Led the team responsible for the development of the RSM Credit Review Assistant Software
• Led a team assigned to complete a large FRB mandated co-sourced credit review, covering the entire commercial portfolio for a foreign branch office of one of the top five largest financial institutions in the world
• Led a team assigned to complete a large OCC mandated independent credit review covering the entire leveraged and non-leveraged portfolio and was part of the team tasked with assisting in the development of an independent credit review department, new leverage lending standards and new regulatory risk rating requirements for a foreign branch office of one of the top 20 largest financial institutions in the world.
• Led a team assigned to complete a credit policy enhancement in response to regulatory criticism in the areas of commercial and consumer lending, appraisal management, and credit risk rating.
• Served as the chief credit officer for a commercial bank in Michigan where responsibilities included oversight and management of the overall credit function for the bank. In this role, Justin developed and established the bank’s first formal credit department, including implementing a new and significantly improved loan policy and improved commercial lending operations procedures. He was responsible for retail lending and mortgage department oversight.
• Justin served as a senior manager with a regional accounting firm where he provided commercial credit review services and credit risk management consulting services to financial institutions ranging in size from $150 million to $10 billion in total assets.
• Justin served in a variety of roles, starting as a credit analyst and growing to the assistant vice president middle-market lending at two large regional banks. Responsibilities ranged from credit underwriting and risk rating to loan structuring, credit risk management, and new business development for all types of commercial loans. He completed the formal credit training program for Comerica Bank as well.
