Mr. Colonel (COL) Michael R. Mai serves as the Military Deputy, G-8, and Acting Chief of the Army Working Capital Fund (AWCF) for Army Materiel Command (AMC) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. In this role, he oversees the budgeting, execution, and audit compliance of approximately $13 billion annually in AWCF resources supporting Army industrial operations and supply management. As Military Deputy, he also assists the AMC G-8 in the formulation and execution of an annual budget exceeding $55 billion across General Fund and Working Capital Fund activities.
With 25 years of active-duty service, COL Mai has held a wide range of tactical, operational, and strategic assignments across the Department of the Army. His previous roles include Deputy Chief of Staff, G-8, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command; Director, Strategic Operations and Integration Cell, ASA(FM&C); Executive to the Army Budget Office Planning, Programming, and Budgeting Committee; Program Budget Officer, Army Budget Office; Operations Comptroller in Afghanistan; Commander, 9th Financial Management Company; and multiple senior logistics and financial management positions at the Pentagon and in deployed environments.
COL Mai was commissioned in 2000 as a Field Artillery officer from the United States Military Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Systems Engineering. He holds a Master of Business Administration from California State University, San Jose, and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from The Eisenhower School, National Defense University.
In addition to his military career, COL Mai served three tours in the Army World Class Athlete Program as an elite hammer thrower. He represented Team USA at multiple
international competitions, including the IAAF World Championships and the Pan-American Games, where he earned a silver medal, and was a top-ten nationally ranked athlete for a decade.
