Steve directs the Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Lab at Columbia University, which addresses a broad range of topics in human–computer interaction, augmented reality and virtual reality, 3D user interfaces, automated design of graphics and multimedia, mobile and wearable computing, computer games, health applications, and information visualization. Steve is a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE and a member of the CHI Academy. He is the recipient of the ACM SIGCHI 2018 Lifetime Research Award, the IEEE ISMAR 2017 Career Impact Award, the IEEE VGTC 2014 Virtual Reality Career Award, and an ONR Young Investigator Award. He and his students have won the ISWC 2017 Early Innovator Award for their development of the first mobile augmented reality system using a see-through display with GPS, the ACM UIST 2010 Lasting Impact Award for their research on supporting 2D windows in augmented reality, and many best paper awards. Steve has served as general chair or program chair for over a dozen ACM and IEEE conferences and is coauthor of two editions of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice.
