BG Adam Ake was commissioned in 1997 from West Point, where he graduated first in both academic and overall standing. After two years of graduate study as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, where he served as a platoon leader in the division’s cavalry squadron. He then served in a succession of staff and command assignments at Ft. Lewis, Washington, before leaving active duty to attend law school in 2004 and transferring to the Army National Guard.
In 2008, BG Ake deployed to serve on General Petraeus’ special staff in the Multi-National Force-Iraq HQ as Rule of Law Advisor and liaison to Iraq’s Chief Justice. From 2012-14, he commanded 1-175th Infantry (Light), 28th Inf. Division, then served as Initiatives Group Chief for the 29th Inf. Division Commander before beginning a yearlong active-duty fellowship in the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group in July 2015. In August 2016, he mobilized and deployed first as the Deputy J3, Combined Joint Operations Center-Jordan in Amman, and then as the Task Force Spartan/29th Inf. Division’s Dep. Chief of Staff at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.
Following resident senior service college at the National Defense University (NDU)’s College of International Strategic Affairs in 2017-18, he spent two years as a Director for Defense Policy and Strategy on the National Security Council Staff. After transferring to the Army Reserve, BG Ake commanded the 646th Regional Support Group in Madison, Wisconsin, from 2021-23, then served as Deputy Commander, 103d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), in Des Moines, Iowa, until May 2024. Upon selection for promotion to Brigadier General, he returned to active duty as Deputy Director for Operations, Operations Team 4, for the Joint Staff, where he led nuclear command and control operations and supervised global current operations and intelligence for the joint force, until assuming his current duties with Joint Task Force Audit in April 2026.
In civilian life, BG Ake is an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland where he prosecutes federal criminal felony cases. Previously, he served as an Associate Deputy General Counsel for International Affairs at the Department of Defense and as a law clerk to then-Chief Judge Sentelle of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
BG Ake holds a BS (Economics and International/Strategic History) from the U.S. Military Academy, an MBA and M.St. (Strategic History) from Oxford University, and a JD and LLM (Intellectual Property Law and Policy) from the University of Washington.
BG Ake is married to COL (Dr.) Julie Ake, an Army infectious disease physician and the Director of the Military HIV Research Program in Silver Spring, Maryland. They have four children, Elisabeth (23), an Army infantry lieutenant serving in Italy, Daniel (21) a college junior, and Emily (13) and Anneliese (10).
