Michael Policar, MD, MPH, is Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the UCSF School of Medicine, and owner of PolicarLectures, a reproductive health policy consulting company in San Rafael, CA. Since 2015, he has been Clinical Fellow for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), in which he advises staff regarding clinical and health policy issues regarding the Title X family planning program. He is a senior medical advisor to the California Office of Family Planning through a contract with the California Prevention Training Center in San Francisco, CA. He retired from clinical practice in September 2017, after a 34-year career as a clinician educator of ObGyn and primary care residents at the San Francisco General Hospital. From 2005 through 2014, he was Medical Director of UCSF Program Support and Evaluation for the Family PACT Program, the family planning and STI program operated by the California State Office of Family Planning. Between 1999-2005, he was Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of the NorthBay Healthcare System in Fairfield, California, and Medical Director of the Partnership HealthPlan of California (1995-1999) . He is former Vice President for Medical Affairs of PPFA. a position that he held between 1992-1994.
Dr. Policar is a widely known speaker with an interest in health delivery systems and women’s health issues, including family planning, cervical cancer screening and management of pre-cancers, health screening, menopause, female genital tract infections, and genital skin conditions. He is a senior author of Contraceptive Technology. He has served on expert advisory panels of the CDC that resulted in the publication of the CDC Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC), the CDC Selected Practice Recommendations (SPR) for Contraceptive Use and Providing Quality Family Planning Services: Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs (2014).
