TITLE: National Wetland Condition Assessment: The third collaborative survey of wetlands in the United States
ABSTRACT: The National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA) is an EPA, state, and Tribal partnership to assess the condition of wetlands across the United States. It uses thirteen indicators to assess biological, physical, and chemical wetland condition. The NWCA is repeated every five years, and to date three iterations of the survey (2011, 2016, and 2021) have been completed. Nationwide less than half of wetland area was rated as good vegetation quality and nonnative plants are a widespread concern. Little change in the biological indicators has been documented between surveys at the national scale. Wetlands in the Eastern Mountains and Upper Midwest ecoregion, however, saw a decrease of 17 percentage points in area that was in good condition for the nonnative plants indicator.
