ECOC 2023 Annual Summit - Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education Session: Recapturing Learning Loss for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

Attendees to this session will receive six hours of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Credits. This session will address methods for attaining success  with multi-lingual learners. 


The credits have not been preapproved by the Colorado Department of Education. 

Part One 2.0 hours Addressing the Affective Domain: Creating, Maintaining and Evaluating Inclusive Classroom and School Culture for Emergent Bilingual Students The presenter will model tools to identify current culture and use resources to support building an inclusive culture. Exploration of unconscious and implicit bias concepts will lay the foundation for awareness with the goal of ensuring students develop a sense of belonging. Special attention on ways of cultivating relationships with CLD students and families will be addressed.

Part Two 2.0 hours Structured Academic Discussions in Core and Enrichment Classrooms: Exploring, Practicing and Implementing Effective Strategies for Beginner and Intermediate level Emergent Bilingual Students. Participants will learn literacy strategies for incorporating listening and speaking before, during and after reading and writing to ensure comprehension and language growth. These strategies can be used in various core and enrichment classes at the elementary and secondary levels.

Part Three 2.0 hours Universal Design for Learning(UDL) as an Avenue to Address Emergent Bilingual Student Needs Participants will explore the principles of UDL Expert Learning and Culturally Responsive Teaching. Time will be devoted to exploring UDL strategies and case studies to create a plan of action to address Emergent Bilingual student needs on campuses.
