Vancouver, BC - NFPA Educational Seminars
CASA will be offering three days of NFPA seminars on the following topics; Sprinkler System Installation Requirements, Sprinkler System Hydraulics & Acceptance Testing; and The "Know How" for Sprinkler Acceptance

December 7, 2020 -Sprinkler System Installation Requirements (NFPA 13)

PURPOSE- There are hundreds of types of sprinklers in use today. Determining where to locate them can be a complex task. They need to be spaced properly and installed in specific locations to ensure coverage of the protected area and located far enough away from obstructions to ensure that the spray pattern can adequately develop and control or suppress a fire. The rules that govern this complex matrix of decisions are found in Chapter 8 of NFPA 13 on Installation Requirements. This fast paced and interactive seminar will guide the participant through series of decisions and requirements that lead to compliance with NFPA 13 and ensure the system will operate properly when needed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  •        Discuss how the Occupancy Classification drives sprinkler system installation requirements.
  • Describe the process for selecting sprinklers for installation.
  • Discuss the effects of obstructions to sprinkler spray and how to avoid them.
  • Identify the specific installation requirements for various types of sprinklers
  • Identify the locations where sprinklers can be omitted

December 8, 2020 Sprinkler System Hydraulics & Acceptance Testing

PURPOSE- This seminar will cover the acceptance test requirements for new fire sprinkler systems, underground fire mains, and fire pumps. It will also address the situations where equipment in existing systems is repaired or replaced. Next, the program will cover basic hydraulics. The program will conclude with a look at the standardized forms that NFPA 13 uses for computer generated hydraulic calculations and how to review these forms for the important information necessary for plan review.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES-

  • Explain the acceptance testing requirements for new sprinkler systems
  • Explain the acceptance testing requirements for new private fire mains
  • Explain the acceptance testing requirements for new fire pumps
  • Evaluate the hydraulic calculations presented with a set of working plans submitted for review and approval

December 9, 2020 The "Know How" for Sprinkler System Acceptance

PURPOSE- This one-day seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct field inspections & final inspections for fire sprinkler & standpipe systems. Fire sprinkler systems & standpipe systems are installed in stages and inspections are typically required at various stages before proceeding to the next stage. Codes typically require periodic on-site inspections as construction progresses to ensure installations are being performed according to approved construction documents. This work typically requires inspection & are allowed to be covered, and/or before the system is commissioned. This course is designed to familiarize the attendee with the visual & physical inspection requirements of typical codes and standards.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES-

  • Discuss the relationship various codes & standards have with the plan reviewer, field inspector & commissioner of the system.
  • Compare the actual installation with the approved construction drawings for compliance with appropriate codes & standards.
  • Explain the duties of the inspector during on-site inspections of the installed system
  • Employ contemporary techniques of field inspections.
  • Understand the various stages involved in the installation of systems and the need to correlate & interact with contractors, other inspectors & the authorities having jurisdiction.
