Effective Building Designs with Concrete Masonry – 1 PDH

Thanks to several positive changes in ASTM C90 and TMS 402/602 in recent years, a new generation of Concrete Masonry Units is having a significant impact on load-bearing masonry construction efficiency.

This presentation will explain these changes in detail and will feature a case study showing substantial cost savings as a result of a higher specified strength masonry assembly. The program will also chronicle the evolution of the CMU manufacturing process and will compare and contrast early production methods with modern technology used today. In addition, participants will gain a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of moisture resistant concrete masonry construction.

Thermal Performance of Concrete Masonry Wall Systems – 1 PDH

This presentation is based on the National Concrete Masonry Association’s (NCMA) Thermal Catalog of Concrete Masonry Assemblies. The contributions of concrete masonry’s thermal mass to energy efficient structures will be highlighted. The presentation will also introduce several strategies for insulating both single and multi-wythe construction. In addition, attendees will receive an overview of various methods of compliance for masonry assemblies with respect to the 2020 New York State Energy Conservation Code. 

Speaker Information:

Nicholas F. Carparelli is the Executive Director of the New York State Concrete Masonry Association (NYSCMA) and a LEED Green Associate.

Nick currently serves on the Board of Directors for the ACI Central NY Chapter, and is the Chairman for the Masonry category of the Chapter’s annual Design & Installation Awards. He is a past member of board of directors of the USGBC NY Upstate Chapter and was a member of the technical subcommittee for review of the 2013 NYS Residential Building Code. Nick also volunteers his time as a member of the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica and is a past member  of the Society’s board of trustees.

Prior to assuming the directorship at the NYSCMA, Nick served as Director of Paving Services for Central NY for the American Concrete Pavement Association, Northeast Chapter. Nick has been involved in the construction and building products industry for his entire career, beginning with his family’s block, ready-mix and building supply business in 1971.
