The future energy system - Meeting complexity with flexibility
How conventional power plants can reduce their environmental impact by increasing their flexibility and efficiency

The share of renewable energy in Europe is growing rapidly driven by the objective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, European power consumption is continuing to grow and with it, its dependency on variable renewable sources. Due to the volatile nature renewable energy sources and as large scale energy storage technologies are not yet mature and economically viable, conventional power plants are still needed for generating flexible back-up power to stabilise the electricity system, and to secure energy supply.

The EU-funded research projects TURBO-REFLEX, PUMP-HEAT and sCO2-Flex develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for existing and future power plants to fulfil this role. Based on their first project results, the three consortia invite you to a series of Keynotes, presentations and a Panel Discussion on the potential role of conventional power plants in the transition process towards a future low carbon energy sector, and the respective policy and research implications.
