2023 Slingerland® Structured Literacy Conference

This 2-day event will be held in Seattle, at Hamlin Robinson School’s brand-new Conference Center.

Registration is currently closed. To be added to the waitlist, please email us via mail@slingerland.org.

Educators across the nation and the world are discussing and exploring the best ways to close literacy gaps employing what we understand about structured literacy and the science of reading. Slingerland® Literacy Institute is happy to host a two-day conference with experts on the front lines of literacy and learning research.

This conference aims to provide exceptional professional development as well as opportunities to network for classroom and intervention teachers, administrators, and instructional coaches.

Saturday, May 6: Reconnecting to our Roots

Dr. Virginia Berninger will present on how over two decades of multidisciplinary research has informed assessment and instructional procedures for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and OWL LD (oral and written language learning disability). Beverly J. Wolf will offer a tribute to Beth Slingerland, with whom she collaborated. Wolf will focus on Slingerland’s now research-supported insights and explain the digital and hard copy resources the Slingerland® Literacy Institute now has available for handwriting and oral and written language. Then, Bonnie Meyer will moderate a question and answer session with Berninger and Wolf including audience-submitted questions. Rounding out our morning, Dr. Nancy Cushen White will explore how explicit instruction in spelling that integrates phonology, orthography, and morphology-etymology is also effective for teaching word identification, vocabulary, content knowledge, and reading comprehension.

Sunday, May 7: Taking a Deeper Look

Dr. David Kilpatrick and Shira Naftel will give a two-part presentation. Dr. Kilpatrick will present on broader implications of structured literacy in schools. Shira Naftel will apply the ideas Kilpatrick explores in as she makes the case for developing particular literacy skills throughout all school levels. Dr. Kilpatrick will finish the session with a book signing of his new work, Equipped for Reading Success.

Recommendation to Attendees: Resources will be available for digital download throughout the conference. Attendees are advised to bring a laptop or tablet for ease of access.

The 2023 Slingerland® Structured Literacy Conference team will be working with local health authorities to ensure that we adhere to health recommendations in place during the conference.  Conference participants acknowledge as a part of their registration to adhere to current health recommendations in place at the time of the conference. For more information, check the Seattle and King County Department of Health.
