Nine-Month Extended Practicum Class - Available Online or On-site

The Slingerland Extended Practicum Classes were created for those seeking certification as a Certified Slingerland Teacher or those needing additional support in implementation of the Slingerland® Approach with students.  Scheduled for a nine (9) month period, class will begin September 30 and go through mid-June of the following year.

The minimum requirements for participants accepted into the Extended Practicum Class is satisfactory completion of the Introductory Level Comprehensive Class and submission of a Certification Interest and Instructor Approval form.   Detailed class information and objectives for the practicum classes can be found here.

Upon acceptance to an Extended Practicum Class, participants will be assigned to a coach(es) for the entirety of the class.  Participants will also be required to connect with their coach through the Institute's video collaboration platform.  Access information for the platform will be provided upon receipt of the registration.

Graduate level extension credit will be available for the Extended Practicum Classes.  The cost for the credit is an additional fee paid directly to the University of San Diego.  Enrollment for USD extension credit will be available by August 30, 2020.

SIL Introductory Level Extended Practicum Class: Prerequisite - completion of the Introductory Level Comprehensive Class

Objectives

  • To understand what your students need and where to begin instruction
  • How to get started
  • How to allocate Slingerland instructional time
  • To successfully develop and deliver Slingerland lessons
  • To integrate all components included in the Slingerland teaching format into lessons using existing curriculum materials
  • To use effective time management to maximize student learning
  • To plan the sequence for instruction throughout the school year
  • To use student performance to inform planning of subsequent lessons and determine pace and content of the instructional program
  • To use pre-and post-assessments, as well as ongoing progress monitoring, to evaluate progress
  • To effectively implement the Slingerland® Approach in a supervised practicum 

Class details:

  • 10 hours of supervised practicum following the Introductory Level Comprehensive class
  • Minimum 9 months – September/October through May/June
  • Regular implementation of the Slingerland® Approach with your student, group, or class
  • Document 60 hours (or equivalent) of instruction (eighty 45-minute lessons; sixty 60-minute lessons, etc.)
  • Submission of written lesson plans, student’s written work, and reflection of the lesson implementation
  • A minimum of 5 direct observations of complete lessons (both Auditory and Visual). May be done live or via electronic means.
  • Regularly scheduled coaching and feedback sessions
  • All IMSLEC-specified competencies documented in final observation with written and performance-based exit assessment
  • They will apply the approach to work in the practicum with children for a required minimum of 21 hours
  • Required for course completion and designed for participants seeking Slingerland Certification at the Teaching Level or those seeking additional support implementing Slingerland procedures in their own professional setting

SIL Continuum Level Extended Practicum Class: Prerequisite - completion of the Introductory Level Comprehensive Class, Introductory Level Extended Practicum Class and the Second Level Continuum Comprehensive Class

Objectives:
  • To demonstrate complete application of the full Slingerland® Approach
  • To demonstrate competency in teaching the English Language including, phonology, phonics, orthography, morphology, syllabication, semantics, and syntax
  • To demonstrate understanding of the acquisition of reading and written expression
  • To successfully develop and deliver lessons that incorporate simultaneous auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-motor modalities for instruction
  • To write and implement a week (5 days) of fully integrated lessons for teaching a dictation paragraph 
  • To teach the 1-1-1 (doubling), the silent-e (drop), and the y (change) spelling rules for addition of suffixes
  • To integrate all components included in the Slingerland teaching format into lessons using existing language arts curriculum
  • To use pre-and post-assessments, as well as ongoing progress-monitoring tools, to evaluate progress
  • To effectively implement the Slingerland® Approach in a supervised practicum
  • To complete all requirements for Slingerland Certification at the Teaching Level

 Class details:

  • 10 hours of supervised, guided practicum following the Second Level Continuum Comprehensive Class
  • Minimum 9 months – September through May
  • Regularly scheduled lessons planned and implemented using the Slingerland®Approach with your student, group, or class   
  • Document 60 hours (or equivalent) of instruction (e.g., eighty 45-minute lessons; sixty 60-minute lessons)
  • Submission of written lesson plans and student’s written work and evaluation
  • A minimum of 5 direct observations of complete lessons (both Auditory and Visual). May be done live or via electronic means.
  • Regular coaching and feedback sessions
  • All IMSLEC-specified competencies documented in final observation with written and performance-based exit assessment
  • Required for course completion and designed for participants seeking Slingerland Certification at the Teaching Level or those seeking additional support with implementation of Slingerland procedures in their own professional setting
  • Participation in an electronic coaching platform for posting documents and videos
