The 2026 Behavioral Health Professional Development Institute brings together behavioral
health professionals, supervisors, data managers, educators, and service
providers for three days of focused learning and collaboration. Participants will
explore practical strategies for strengthening clinical supervision, using
behavioral health data effectively, applying evidence-informed and
community-defined practices, and building skills that support high-quality care
across communities in the Great Plains region.
The Institute will facilitate three workshops to meet the needs of the diverse behavioral health workforce:

- Behavioral Health Professional Workshop [Wednesday, September 16th to Thursday, September 17th]

Carla Kmett Danielson, Ph.D., is an MUSC clinical psychologist and professor specializing in trauma and co-occurring substance use in youth. She developed Risk Reduction through Family Therapy (RRFT), an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and SUD.
John Jewett, MA, NCC, LPCC, LPC
John is a Board-Certified Professional Counselor. For over 16 years, he has worked in the IHS system. He is currently Chair of the Board of the National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation. He is an enrolled in the Oglala Lakota Nation.
Alicia LaLoggia is a public health and behavioral health professional committed to strengthening systems, advancing health equity, and improving community well-being.
Charlie is a licensed professional counselor and has training surrounding trauma informed addictions counseling techniques.
Bill offers more than 40 years of experience as a counselor, working with children, adolescents and adults with mental health and substance use disorders.

Tara is a therapist and clinical supervisor. Her clinical training includes working with individuals and families across a variety of ages and presenting concerns, with a particular focus on addiction and trauma-informed care.

Clinical Supervisors Workshop
Data Managers Workshop
The Data Managers Workshop is an introduction to using Microsoft Excel to organize, summarize, and report basic program data. Participants will review core concepts from Introduction to Statistics, including preparing frequency tables and understanding levels of data to select the correct graphs and tables for reporting. The workshop will cover key Excel modules such as pivot tables, the Data Analysis ToolPak, charts, and other essential features.
Students will begin with basic descriptive statistics and conclude with an introduction to significance testing to assess changes in client psychometric measures. Participants will work with a large, fictitious but realistic dataset similar to what would be exported from a typical Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
Note: This workshop is designed for participants with limited or emerging skills in data analysis and statistics, or for individuals who are unfamiliar with Microsoft Excel’s advanced features. The learning format is hands-on. Participants do not need to be working in behavioral health—anyone interested in improving the use of their program data will benefit.
All participants must arrive with their own laptop with an active license of Microsoft Excel.
