Course description

DAY 1:  Hands on: The Equine Stifle

The equine stifle is one of the more complex joints in the horse. Lameness originating from the hip is relatively rare, but has seen increased attention in recent years. The didactic morning lecture will be spent exploring the pertinent anatomy, imaging and pertinent diagnostic anesthesia of the equine stifle and hip. You will discuss clinical cases with the instructors and talk about approaches to treating the equine athlete with clinicians who make a living doing just that. Different conditions are reviewed including: osteoarthrosis, key ligament desmopathies/enthesopathies of the stifle, and developmental diseases.

The afternoon will be spent in an intense exploration of ultra-sounding the equine stifle and hip with specific goals. You will alternate between small groups with experienced instructors who's goal is to make sure you achieve your goal of competence in this challenging clinical areas. You will walk away with notes and the personal experience to better diagnosis these problems and differentiate between normal and abnormal clinical issues back in your practice.      

DAY 2: Hands on: The Equine Tarsus and Proximal Suspensory Ligament

The equine tarsus ands proximal metatarsus has complex soft tissue anatomy that is often challenging to image. You will spend the morning exploring the pertinent anatomy, imaging and pertinent diagnostic blocks. You will discuss clinical cases with the instructors and talk about approaches to diagnosing injuries and treating the equine athlete with clinicians who make a living doing just that. Different conditions are reviewed including: disease processes of the tarsus and key ligament desmopathies/enthesopathies and fractures.

The afternoon will be spent in an intense exploration of ultrasonographic examination of the tarsus and proximal plantar metatarsus (proximal suspensory ligament) with specific goals. You will alternate between small groups with experienced instructors who's goal is to make sure you achieve your goal of competence in this challenging clinical areas. You will walk away with notes and the personal experience to better diagnosis these problems and differentiate between normal and abnormal clinical issues back in your practice.
