Join Calbright College on Wednesday, February 4 for an in-depth policy briefing on how competency-based, flexible education is improving the lives of California's working-age adults.

    • Explore effective strategies to maximize the return on California's investment in higher education as a conduit for economic mobility, including student perspectives.
    • Hear from regional and statewide leaders about innovative partnerships focused on timely, hands-on learning for adults looking to upskill, reskill, and join the modern workforce.
    • Discover how learner-centered solutions can be scaled to reach more working-age adults across California, transform their paths to success in higher education, and ensure economic resilience in shifting labor markets.

    The event, hosted at The California Endowment Center for Healthy Communities, will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with registration, breakfast, coffee, and networking beginning at 9:00 a.m. At the conclusion of the event, a boxed lunch will be provided.

    Hortencia Armendáriz has been in the labor movement for over 21 years, since she began as a grassroots community organizer for the United Farm Workers in the borderlands of the tip of Texas.

    Paul Fain

    Paul is co-founder of Work Shift, editor of the must-read newsletter, The Job, and host of The Cusp podcast. A veteran higher education reporter, Paul is perhaps the nation’s top journalist focused on connections between education and work.

    Paul Granillo

    Paul Granillo is president and CEO of the Inland Empire Economic Partnership (IEEP), one of the most recognized statewide organizations focused on galvanizing cross-sector leadership in order to build a stronger regional economy.

    Su Jin Jez, PhD

    As CEO of California Competes, Dr. Su Jin Jez leads the organization’s work to develop nonpartisan and financially pragmatic recommendations for improved higher education and workforce policies and practices across California.

    Dr. Kate Mahar

    Kate serves as the Associate Vice President of Innovation and Strategic Initiatives at Shasta College, where she supports institutional efforts to advance equity, innovation, and workforce-aligned education.

    Ajita Talwalker Menon

    Ajita Talwalker Menon is the President and CEO for Calbright College. Her job is to lead the college to help underserved Californians gain greater economic mobility and to provide skilled talent for hiring employers.

    Dr. Mara Woody

    For nearly two decades, Dr. Mara Woody has been at the forefront of transforming higher education to better serve learners and the evolving workforce. As Director of Strategic Partnerships at Riipen, she is shaping the future of experiential learning.
