Five years ago our library took the bold approach (at the time), of allowing patrons a self-service model for hold requests made for materials our library owned. Fast forward to May 2020: Patrons desperately want into the library, staff desperately want to stay healthy, and patron interactions need to stay contact-free as possible--What to do? Our Access Services Team quickly piloted and permanently adopted several additional self-service holds models including inter-library loan and off-site materials. Benefits have included patron empowerment, speed of service and minimal health concern risks. Learn best practices to ensure patron privacy, assure proper checkout and return of materials, and how to handle security concerns. Learn how you can liberate workspace dedicated to restricting materials behind your service desks, trust your patron base, and eliminate health concerns for staff.
