Many academic libraries are exploring and implementing Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) (digitizing and lending entire works in a 1:1 print to digital ratio) of print materials to expand access to their collections for course reserves and for sharing non-circulating special collections materials. COVID restricted access conditions boosted interest this past year in CDL to expand digital resource sharing. Our library actually started exploring and planning for CDL in 2018. This session describes our experiences to date as we progressed through the three phases of our journey: Exploration, Piloting, and Implementation. The session will touch on other operational CDL models, resources to consult, legal/copyright issues, and software and equipment. The session will include time for open discussion for others to share plans, tips and lessons learned from their journey on the path to increasing access to resources with CDL.
