Event Highlights

This conference features leading experts in gambling research and responsible gaming:

  • Dr. Grubbs will present findings from his research on the co-occurrence of sports betting and alcohol use, and discuss how gambling-related cognitions and the principles of positive play can be leveraged to design more effective interventions. The session will focus on trends particularly relevant to younger adults and sports bettors in the Midwest.
  • Dr. Whelan will share results from a series of casino-based audit studies using a "secret shopper" approach to evaluate how self-exclusion, responsible gambling, and treatment referrals are operationalized in practice. He will apply a  Reno Model approach to explore how the industry professionals and service providers can enhance the access and engagement of responsible gambling tools to reduce gambling harms.
  • Dr. Grant Weinandy will explore the journey toward seeking help for gambling issues, using data from the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline and original research, including college students and a national sample. The session will address key psychological and structural barriers, with opportunities for attendees to discuss solutions specific to their communities.
  • Dr. Kraus will explore gambling disorders among veterans and other trauma-affected populations. Drawing on clinical and research insights, he will outline effective, trauma-informed interventions and address the unique needs of specialized populations.
