The Big Tree Ideas Salon, Resilience: From the Earth to the Stars
Four flash talks on one theme, across disciplines!
April 08, 2022  ·  Pete's Place - Corbett Center

In response to NMSU’s vision of fostering communication and collaboration across disciplines, we are excited to announce a new initiative: the Big Tree Ideas Salon. At each salon, we will invite speakers from different disciplines across NMSU Colleges and the larger Las Cruces community, to give 6-minute flash talks offering one key idea from their research pertaining to the chosen theme.

Our first salon, taking place on April 8th, will be the “Resilience Salon: From the Earth to the Stars." Rachel Gioannini (Assistant Professor of Plants and Environmental Sciences) will speak about plant resilience, Diana O'Brien (Director of Development and Community Outreach at Jardin de Los Ninos) will speak about the resilience of families and communities, Neil Harvey (Professor and Dpt Head of Government), will speak about the resilience of democracy, and Karen Kinemuchi (astronomer and observer at Apache Point observatory) will speak about what we learn about resilience from stars at their midlife, most unstable stage. Taken together, the talks will cast new light on the possibility of cultivating resilience in our times.

Discussion and mingling to follow the talks! Cash bar, food provided.

April 8th, 4:30 - 6:30pm, talks begin at 5:00
